Transforming Your Life : One Moment At A Time
Do you feel stuck in a rut?
Do you have feelings like, nothing will get any better?
How about, do you feel like your personality is fixed, that it doesn’t change?
Well, I am here to tell you, you can be anyone you want to be.
Who you are is not some fixed state of being. We are changing all the time. For better or worse.
You weren’t born the way you are now. You learned and created who you are along the way.
The good news is, you can change, and change doesn’t have to be so complicated.
But, we have to start today.
Today is the only day that exists.
Yesterday is gone and tomorrow never comes.
We have to deal with today as it is.
Further, we only ever have the NOW.
NOW is the holy instant.
It is perfection.
Forget your past. Create your ideal future. NOW.
The first thing we have to realize, is we are not our mind stream.
I call it a stream because the thoughts just come and go. They are carried down stream if we don’t get caught up in them. We can just let them go.
Meditation helps.
But really, all meditation is, is awareness of the present moment.
When you realize you are not your thoughts, the real work begins.
You realize you can be anybody and anything. It’s your choice.
I recommend writing down exactly who you want to be. What characteristics do you want to see in yourself? What do you value in a person?
For instance:
I want to be trustworthy, funny, kind, mighty, and faithful.
What do you want to be?
When we decide who we want to be, we can begin to bring out these qualities in ourselves by meditating on these qualities.
Feel in your body what it’s like to be trustworthy.
Do the same for what it’s like to be kind.
Spend a couple minutes quietly focusing on these qualities in your mind and body.
Then, when you are ready, take one quality and write it on a blank piece of paper.
Let’s take Kindness.
Underneath kindness, write something like:
I can practice kindness towards my mom and dad by being obedient and listening to what they have to say.
I can practice kindness towards my brother and sister by sharing time with the television.
Meditating and journaling are the one-two punch when it comes to rewriting ourselves.
Another way to recreate yourself is to find a role model. A mentor if you will. They can be a living person around you, or someone you read about in a book. Both are extremely valuable.
We become like the people we spend the most time with.
If there is no one around you that you currently look up to, find an author, or even a character in a book that you would like to become more like.
Then, spend time with said person.
If your desire is to become more courageous, you may find someone in sports, or a public figure that you find particularly inspiring.
Let’s say its your goal is to be more courageous.
Look for opportunities that may present themselves where you can practice courage. Maybe that is starting a conversation with a stranger. Or, talking to that person you have a crush on. Or, maybe it is trying that kick-flip over the staircase on your skateboard.
Whatever it is, we have opportunities every day to practice who we want to become.
There are no fixed qualities within us. Nothing is fixed.
Everything is in a state of flow.
We are being renewed and created every single second.
Who we were yesterday does not have to be who we are today.
We can make a choice, to work on ourselves for the better.
If we don’t like who we are today, we can change it.
If we love who we are today, we can improve on it.
We are never finished.
Life is progressing every day.
Every day we can build upon who we want to be.
RECAP:
Meditate: You are not your thoughts.
Write down who you want to be, what characteristics you want.
Meditate on these qualities.
Elaborate through writing exactly how you would like to act.
Find a mentor. In person or through books.
Look for opportunities to demonstrate new qualities.
Seek to improve day by day.
